The Solar Battery Charging Stations (SBCS) were initially conceived to foster the establishment of an electrical community co-operative or of a private entrepreneur to supply small electricity demands to far-from-the grid households. The great foreseen advantages of the SBCS being security of payment for the electricity service and operation under higher capacity factor. However, an analysis of the annual costs of SBCCs indicates that they are in reality a more expensive alternative due to the shorter life-time of batteries. The paper presents the financial analysis of a case study, where SBCS and SHS were designed in order to offer equal electricity service. The paper also presents the SBCS experience of COPEL, that, after one and a half year of functioning was replaced by SHSs.

Palavras-chave : energia solar; eletrificação rural; centro fotovoltaivo de carga de bateria; sistemas fotovoltaicos domiciliares.
