An expressive share of Brazilian population - about 15 percent, or 25 million people - lives without access to electricity services. Most of these people lives in rural areas. Rural area is a niche market for renewable sources of energy, due to the availability of the resources, to their potential benefits to the local economic activity and to the high costs of electricity supply through net extension, or even with on site electricity generation with diesel oil. In this paper an analysis of most common constraints to the renewables is carried out and the recently proposed policies to deploy renewables in Brazil are analyzed as well. The short and medium term perspectives of electricity production from renewables are finally examined, with special emphasis on the Brazilian rural area.
