The proposal of this paper is to analyse the costs of grid extension in the program of rural electrification "Luz da Terra" since the period of its institution to the current days. It will be presented a methodology to estimate the medium cost of the connection by rural consumer, developed initially for application in simplified distribution grids, based on the Single Wire Earth Return - SWER system. The methodology was developed for use in another systems, including the two-phase vertical, because this system became used largely in the state. As a result of a collection of data by CERESP - São Paulo State Commission of Rural Electrification - the costs among different utilities are compared along the program, taking into account the technical pattern adopted. The work conclusion is that, in spite of the increase of the prices of the materials and components used in the grids, the preponderant factor for the elevation of the unitary costs is the negligence of the utilities with the need of reducing costs, evidenced by the gradual abandonment of the procedures and simplified patterns of construction of rural distribution grids.
