Shell is bringing to the market the revolutionary Powerhouse concept. This concept shall allow rural electrification of remote communities through a equipment specially researched and manufactured by Shell using photovoltaic solar devices as primary source of energy. Each villager (end user) receives a individual Solar Home System (solar module, deep-cycle battery, fixture, lamps and BOS) plus a pre-payment device reader. Through this system, named Powerhouse, every villager pays monthly basis a fee by the energy generated using for this purpose a magnetic card, like those ones used in public phones. During a period of 30 days the Powerhouse releases energy to the end user turn on four DC high efficient lamps plus two plugs for a W&B TV and a AM/FM radio. At the end of 30 days the users should buy another magnetic card in order to allow the machine to keep going normally, otherwise the Powerhouse shall cut off the supply of energy automatically. All the concept has been managed to respect the affordability and willingness of each community. The fee value is based on a technical assessment conducted in each village for perfect match of their economical capabilities and further social aspects. The project is economically viable and offers a real contribution for emission reduction of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, the main dusty found in fossil fuel combustion. Fossil fuels are still used as major source of energy in rural villages around world. The Shell's proposal shall be convince the villagers to exchange fossil fuels energy to a clean and efficient solar home system. The householders shall pay exactly what they already spend with diesel, querosene for candles, paraffin and battery recharge.
