Implementing a rural electrification program with photovoltaic solar technology is a highly complex task since it implies in anticipating and solving problems, where multiple aspects (technical, economic, social, political and managerial) are intertwined. From the analysis of countries which have programs for the dissemination of the photovoltaic technology, like Thailand, Equador, Argentina, Bolivia, Peru, Mexico, The Phillipines, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Dominicane Republic among others, the relevancy of the users participation in those programs becomes quite evident. This is very different from the traditional electrification process through wire networks. Two factors are critical for the success of those programs. Firstly, we consider the technical capacitation and technical assistance. The capacitation of a diverse set of actors, users (appropriate handling), technicians (solar electricians), managers from user associations (technical, financial and administrative management), plays a fundamental role for the assurance of a reasonable functioning of the photovoltaic solar systems, i.e., the assurance of a good electric service. The other determinant factor is the sustainability of the autonomous photovoltaic systems. Two levels of maintenance are defined: predictive and corrective. In this work we describe actions developed in the direction of the technical assistance and capacitation (broad sense) for the PERESF (Program for the Solar Electrification with Photovoltaic Solar Energy), managed by NAPER (Núcleo de Apoio a Projetos de Energias Renováveis), in semi-arid region of the state of Pernambuco.
