This work presents a brief discussion about the recent situation of licencing the construction of small hydroelectric power plants in Portugal, and also analyses the environmental aspects as well as the regulating legislation. Both the cummulative and the sinergetic impacts from the presence of various hydroelectric plants at the same hydrografic basin are also discussed, with special emphasis to the interference of the future hydraulic resources management. The expected environmental impacts related to both the location and characteristics of the small hydroelectric power plants are important to establish the minimization of the environmental impacts.
