The indiscriminate firewood use constitutes one of the main responsible for its shortage and high prices. Although the furnaces are projected to operate with the maximum efficiency, in the practice it is observed excessive consumption of fuel and consequent loss of energy by its inadequate operation. The incomplete combustion in direct fire furnaces can result in harms of the product quality. This work proposes a methodology for the control of the combustion, that consists of the control of the opening of primary air (combustion air) guaranteeing temperatures so that it happens the complete combustion. A low cost thermometer was built for mensuration of the combustion temperature. It is settled down limits in the opening of entrance of primary air, in way to guarantee excess of air and enough combustion temperature for it burns it of all the volatile ones. The methodology proposal allows the handling eficient of the furnace (minimum firewood consumption) and the definition of a work plan for the operator that ahead of time will know the amount of firewood to add in each interval of time. This methodology substitutes the handling of furnaces for the use of measurement of monoxide of carbon.
