This paper presents a study of the behavior of the grounding of single wire earth return circuits (SWER) by means of the finite-element method. Numeric techniques of field mapping are used to determine the electric field around the grounding electrode, which results in the knowledge of current distribution both for steady state and fault conditions. The area of influence of the grounding electrode (domain of study) is divided in small volume elements with a tetrahedron shape, which allows the calculation of the electric potentials in their vertexes. A post-processing stage supplies the electric field map and the current distribution for the whole domain. The final results obtained are the equipontential curves mapped at the soil surface and at specified vertical planes through the domain of study, the ground resistance of the electrode configuration, surface potential curves for predetermined directions, color chat for step voltage and others. The study enables the designer to evaluate precisely the performance of the grounding system and to develop the best solutions as regards safe by and economy.
