The central pivot irrigation system is among the most common systems used in Brazil. The expense with electric energy is one of the most significant factors in the composition of the variable costs. In this work the economical viability of the use of frequency inverters was evaluated for rationalisation of the use of the electric energy in a central pivot irrigation system average pressure type. For such, it was considered: the different requirements of load indexes, system performance, as well as the variations on the reactive power demanded by the irrigated perimeter. In the economical analysis it was considered the following economical indexes: internal return rate (IRR), period of capital return, benefit cost ratio and capital period return. The load liberation possibility from the transformer was also evaluated when this equipment was considered to be used.
