This paper deals with the economic and technical evaluation of rational use of electrical traction used in conventional sprinkling irrigation systems and central pivot in five farms located in Minas Gerais State, Brazil. The following alternatives to replace the "standard" electrical motor in use the farms were considered: (i) utilisation of high efficient motors adequated to the load; and (ii) utilisation of high efficient motors and increasing of the annual number of hours of functioning. It was considered as indicators of electrical traction rationalisation at the irrigation systems: an high ratio between the mechanical power available and the nominal power of the motor, as well as, an high load factor, that represents the ratio between average and maximum demand. At the farms studied, it was observed that: high ratio between the mechanical power available and the nominal power in average 91%; and in three out of five farms, a relatively low average yearly number of hours of functioning was observed, 893 hours. In one of the farms was economically feasible the electric power rationalisation only by the substitution of the "standard" motor by a high efficient one. Three of farms studied it was economically feasible the rationalisation of electric power by the increasing of the annual number of hours of functioning of the irrigation systems with consequent demand decrease.
