In energy audit for motive force analysis, it is necessary the data acquisition that will facilitate to quantify the technical and economic benefits of this DSM program. For that it is necessary that it is determined the motors' load index and performance. These parameters are estimated by the measurement in work conditions of at least one of the following characteristics of the electric motors: (i) phase currents; (ii) power factor per phase; and (iii) useful electric power. This article investigates the precision of these methods for the load and performance determination of electric motors, having as reference, the method of the useful electric power. It was determined the error by estimating of load and performance of electric motors by the arithmetic and geometric average of the currents and the arithmetic average of the power factor in each phase, in relation to the reference. It was verified that the estimate of the electric motors' load and performance by measuring the arithmetic average power factor, presented results with larger errors, that is, 24,5% and 2%, respectively. On the other hand, these estimates by the arithmetic and geometric average current method presented similar results to each other and with percent error significantly inferior to the previous result, that is, 6,2% and 1%, respectively.

Keywords : electric motors; motor performance; load index; energy audit.
