The use of biomass for production of electrical energy is part of the study for use of renewable energy in Marajo Island, a pilot area for the project, situated between latitudes 02º 30' S and 01º00' N; longitudes 47º 30' W and 52º 00' W, with an area of 49.606 km² and a population of 333.063 inhabitant. A Geographic Information System was used to map the costs for different technologies for electrical energy generation using biomass for the entire region under study. After evaluate the Levelized Electric Cost for the electrical energy produced it was observed that the utilization of biomass is a important option for the electrification of the areas of the island. The software developed in the project can be used also to make local studies with different parameters from the ones used during the development of the project. This can help governmental agencies in the plannification of energy supplies to underdeveloped rural areas.
