The goal of the present work was to calculate the maximum thermodynamic potential of the Babaçu culture in the brazilian territory, what is represented by the sum of all energy available in the biomass that can be used during all of the considered period. The culture represent a huge unexplored potential, as only 7% of the fruit is used to extract the oil, already reaching the partial economic availability, been rejected the fibrous endocarp that represents 59% of the crop, a good energy content material (18000 kJ/kg). Using 1996 crop season numbers was calculated 1,07 millions tons per year of unused endocarp, that lead to 20 millions of GJ per year. If uniformly distributed during the year lead to a 615 MW potential, if only the cropping season is considered the potential goes to 1070 MW. The geographic distribution of this potential concentrates in the main production states: Maranhão, Paiuí and Toacantins, all in the Northeast region of the country. This work concludes that is necessary, and valid, to proceed a availability study of this potential regarding its connections to social and economic development of the region as well as been an energy source capable to supply local demand.
