Real life of poor country people always has many surprises to disclose to dwellers of the big cities. The present work analyses du aspect of the life poor country people, who have entered 21 st century without electric light in their homes and without access to social services, which are their right according to the Federal Constitution. It examines the daily life of São Paulo's rural public schools without electric illumination, intending to contribute to the discussion of the social role of electric supply. The main problems associated with the lack of the electric supply are: bad illumination, impossibility to use didactic equipments, poor quality of students' meals, loss of food due to the lack of refrigerators, lack of communication and lack of water sources, exclusion of school at night and difficulties with teachers' housing. Half of the schools without electric light are near to the distribution lines, at less than one kilometer of distance. There are some schools without lights under the electric net. It has also been evidenced the difficulty of engaging on rural electrification programs and, that, the poor results associated with photovoltaic solar systems dissemination programs without policies for maintenance and further development.
