Abstract
WOELZ, Augustin T. Aquecedor solar de baixo custo (ASBC): uma alternativa custo-efetiva. The team responsible for the development of the ASBC has been housed in the CIETEC (Incubation Center for Technology Companies) since January 1999. As a result of the spirit of ECO 92 Meeting, the team began development of a family of solar heaters so economical that they could be used by any Brazilian family. It was estimated that the cost of the ASBC, depending on the model, should range between 2% and 10% of the cost of a traditional solar heater, using do-it-yourself construction. Five areas were taken into particular consideration in the development of the ASBC. Unique features of Brazilian residential water systems, Brazil's peculiar weather characteristics, the replacing of industrial processes with do-it-yourself activities, availability of materials near the user and the possibility of accepting quality limitations. Projected results after full implementation: Reduction about 80% of the energy consumed by the 31 million families that own residential electric showers, generation of substantial nationwide savings, training of a large contingent of youth for new careers, limitation of CO2 emissions from the new Brazilian thermoelectrical plants. new level of awareness and citizenship among less privileged Brazilians and improvement of Brazil's image abroad. The technology is spread out through website: www.sunpower.com.br and is widely consulted.. Simultaneously the new NGO "Society of the Sun", now responsible for the ASBC, initiated voluntary activities and agreements that aim to disseminate the new technology to primary and secondary school students, union members, participants in joint efforts, to low income housing organizations, to leaders of assistance organizations, church members and other "portals" that allow access to the less privileged Brazilian population.
