This work approaches both the theoretical and practical aspects of the gasification technologies for the energetic conversion of residual biomasses from industrial, agricultural and urban activities into alternative energetic resources. Examples of technologies presented on the international literature regarded to this subject show that gasification systems have been attracting the attention due to their potentials on residues treatment through their thermal destruction, as well as energy generation process. Also, technical aspects are approached on the particular physical and chemical properties of these materials, that may impose limitations or obstacles on the use and development of gasification processes. The sludge generated on water and sewage treatment facilities is a particular subject of this discussion, in view of the on going experience of the DETF/FEM from UNICAMP project on co-gasification. Finally, the potential of the usage of fluidised bed gasification was discussed as a method for renewable energy generation, as well as solution for problems faced on the treatment of residues for isolated communities and small urban centres.
