Economic and environmental considerations have brought a new interest in refrigerations powered by a heat source. A considerable research effort has been direct to the study of such refrigerating systems. These systems may utilize renewable energy sources, such as solar energy and hot gases emited by others systems. In a few cases, were environment preservation is the priority, the solar refrigeration is an alternative for the food and medicine conservation. An oil refinary, is an industry where there is plenty of hot air emissions. An absortion system properly designed could fullfil the needs of the refrigeration plant and air conditioning, avoid and aditional energy consumption associated with these necessities. The refrigerating or air conditioning absortion system comprises two distinct work fluids, e. g.,water and a cooling fluids, e. g., ammonia. The solution receives the heat from hot gases through heat exchanger called generator; the compressor is replaced by a set of equipaments, i. e., absorver pump, valve and generator. An absortion refrigerator ELECTROLUX without pump was used to build the prototype. For that aim, a counter flow heat exchanger was designed, built and implemented in the lab to provide the necessary heat for the equipament, in substitution to the original multipurpose set (electricity and gas combustion).Therefore, this research analyses a refrigerating or air conditioning absortion system based on the ammonia/water pair, using the energy of the hot gas emssions as the heat source for the cicle. The study was carried out in order to promote energy income in the system, heat energy, equivalent to the original system that works either by an electrical resistance or by heat burner.
