Due to the accelerated growth in the electric energy costs the country is facing today it is a task for the researchers to study more efficient energy consumer processes in order to produce a decrease of value in the electric energy item in general farming activities. As an action, the Brazilian government approved the so called Energy Efficiency Law (law nº 10295, of October 17th, 2001), this law makes mandatory that consumer machines and electrical devices, made or sold in the country, should comply respectively, with maximum and minimum levels of energy consumption and efficiency. To evaluate machines in rural electrical systems concerning its specific consumption (kWh/t), such as: disintegrators, choppers, grinders (DPM's), and rotary machines to do farm work, CEMIG (Companhia Energética de Minas Gerais), in a joint work with: GTZ (German Agency for Technical Cooperation), UFV (Universidade Federal de Viçosa - MG) with the support of EMATER (Rural Extension and Technical Assistance Agency in Minas Gerais) assembled two laboratory units for the testing of rural electrical machines, located respectively at UFV and at the CEMIG Energy Farm (Uberaba - MG). Both units are equipped with data acquisition systems that are able to acquire rotation and torque. When applied to the equipment under test, data obtained will be stored in a microcomputer, this makes possible to evaluate the specific consumption (kWh/t) for that machine. Tests are showing that, in general, under adequate tuning conditions, the lowest specific consumption is located in a range of rotation values that are not suggested by the DPM makers. To evaluate the performance of rural electrical equipment, a technical group composed by different organizations in the society will have to propose a unique methodology for the entire country, in order to comply with the Energy Efficiency Law.
