The project discussed in this article was developed by the Group of Studies in Energy of PUC-MG, GREEN Solar, with support from the Laboratory of Power Electronics of PUC-MG and the Foundation for the Support of Research of the State of Minas Gerais, FAPEMIG. The objective of this project is to control the temperature in the different stages of swine production in order to provide recommendable levels of thermal comfort thus diminishing the mortality rate and at the same time saving energy in the environment heating process. Our challenge is to reach the objective using renewable and non pollutant energy sources. Our work focuses is, in principle, the farrowing facility. This is the stage where the female is taken at the end of the gestation and, after the piglet's birth, there is a 21 day period for the feeding process. After this period the weaning is complete. The pigs are transferred to the day-care center and the female comes back to the gestation shed to wait for the next insemination. In the nursery, the pigs are more resistant but the heating still is necessary. For the maternity the PigPillow®. was developed, hot water mattress allows to the creation of two microclimates, providing comfort for the mother and the piglets. For the nursery facility the most viable solution would be the thermal radiation heaters using biogás produced in the farm.
