Nowadays the electric power generation using fuel cells has become a promising alternative that conciliates high efficiency and low environmental impacts. A fuel cell is an electrochemical device that combines hydrogen with oxygen from air to produce electric energy with heat and water as byproducts. The hydrogen necessary to feed the fuel cell can be obtained from renewable and non-renewable sources. Indeed, the ethanol produced from sugar cane in Brazil is a natural candidate from which hydrogen can be extracted through a process called reforming. This would be an alternative to Diesel largely used to electric generation in isolated communities mainly in the North and Central West country's regions. This work intends to show the main aspects of the project that has been carried out by UNICAMP's Núcleo Interdisciplinar de Planejamento Energético - NIPE associated with Federal University of Mato Grosso - UFMT to install an electric generation unit powered by a fuel cell in a Mato Grosso's isolated community.

Keywords : Reforma etanol; célula a combustível; geração de energia elétrica; comunidades isoladas.
