The utilisation of locally available energy, by using alternative electrical energy generation, reduces the costs related to building long transmission lines and large electric power plants. Among the alternative energy sources, the photovoltaics and the wind generators are easily implemented and play an important role in local energy generation. These energy sources are totally renewable, with low implementation and maintenance costs, when compared to other sources. However, as they need inverters to transform the generated direct current (or asynchronous frequency) energy into alternating current at industrial frequency, the alternative systems suffer the harmonic distortion effects. Such voltage and current distortions, imposed by the generators, when added to those generated by non-linear loads, results in harmful effects on the system as a hole. This paper gives an overview on the harmonic distortion sources, presents definitions related to harmonic distortion and discusses the effect of such distortions on the main rural area equipment.
