One of the greatest challenges faced by mankind today is to achieve sustainable development, as was pointed out at The Rio de Janeiro Conference in 1992, during several Conferences on Climatic Changes and, more recently at Johannesburg Rio+10. After Eco92, with the aim of implementing the Agenda 21, several institutions have started studies on indicators that allow for the advances to be monitored and guide us through the decision-making process. In light of great initiative, remarks for UN's important work on policy evaluation, systems and models, whose main tool is the Human Development Index (HDI). Thereafter, many indicators-related aspects to are discussed, as a first step in the program on energy-environmental indicators carried out by the Núcleo Interdisciplinar de Planejamento Energético - NIPE/UNICAMP.
