The development of the societies has been demanding energy consumption every time larger. That has been contributing to increasing the environmental pollution in the planet. If the current production and consumption patterns of energy were maintained, the countries will have to implement effective measures for avoiding that problem. In 1997, the Kyoto Protocol authorized the adoption of the Clean Development Mechanism as instrument to mitigate the emissions of the gases that cause the greenhouse effect. In this way, the reforestation of degraded rural areas became considered a strategy that can contribute significantly to mitigating the carbon emissions. This article presents a methodology for the calculation of the carbon emission mitigation cost when the reforestation is used as clean development mechanism. To detail the functionality of that methodology, the carbon emissions in United States are used as case study. The obtained results confirm that the mitigation cost of the reforestation is low, but it is lower when the methodology uses the total amount of emitted carbon, low discount rates and return time for the investment equal to the useful life of the planted forest. On the other hand, as the reforestation will happen mainly in degraded rural areas, the investments in that mitigation mechanism can contribute to employment and income generation in rural areas.

Keywords : Reflorestamento; emissão de carbono; custo de mitigação.
