This research presents details about the fluidized bed technology developed at Universidade Estadual de Campinas (UNICAMP), Brazil, to convert biomass into bio-oil using fast pyrolysis as a process, and agricultural and industrial residues such as cane trash and bagasse as raw material. The pilot plant has a capacity in the range of 100 to 250 kg/h of biomass. The facility is able to produce bio-oil and fine charcoal from biomass. The fluidization is made with air. The experimental optimization of the parameters and the quality of pyrolysis products is the strategy applied and shown in this study. Some considerations about the process scale-up and the main operational problems are also showed, discussed, and troubleshooted. Finally some criteria to make an economical analysis are delined to consider the scale up and operational changes in the facility.
