The present work has as aim to develop a methodology in Geographical Information System (GIS) environ to determine the most favorable areas for installation of Small Hydropower System (SHS). The determination of the physical potential for the SCS construction should consider the conjugation of two main parameters: a) outflow estimate and b) identification of the topographical difference. Outflow data were simulated for rivers from the contribution area image obtained by the Digital Elevation Model. The employment of GIS allows an optimization of this calculation being an extremely simple and fast procedure for analysis in the regional context. The use of the hydraulic potential of fall for SHS can be made considering two physiographical situations: a) topographical difference along the flow that uses natural falls of the river and b) topographical difference in the borders of the flow that needs river deviation. Specific algorithms were developed for both situations. The crossing of these two information that estimate the outflow and fall allows to identify the best places for the SHS construction.
