The use of the sugarcane bioethanol in Brazil was strongly boosted during the 1970's and 1980's, with the advent of the National Alcohol Programme (Proalcool). Following this period a decade of uncertainties came up, when the decline in the Program results were noticeable. Nowadays, it seems that new and good perspectives arise, due to the emergent external and internal markets. In this paper the evolution of the sugarcane bioethanol use in Brazil is addressed, stressing the importance and legacy of the Proalcool. The future perspectives of the alcohol are also discussed.

Keywords : bioethanol; sustainable development; energy policy.
