This paper aims to make an economic, social, environmental, technical and political analysis of the biomass as source of energy, in the different sectors that use this energy in Brazil and in the world. It will also be analyzed and argued the possibilities of biomass uses in Brazil and the barriers to a bigger scale insertion in the energy matrix, as well as proposals of mechanisms for the elimination of these barriers. The research approaches the diverse kinds of biomass´ exploitation, as direct combustion, extraction of oils and fuel manufacturing (alcohol, biodiesel and biogas). For all kinds of exploitation, the diffusion of the biomass use is targeted as strategic and social option for national energy planning.
