This is a bibliographical research carried out from March to May 2001 whose aim was to describe the peers' role in reviewing papers for publication in journals. Books, journals and Internet sites were consulted; as well as journal referees and editors. The authors concluded that the referees' role is important and indispensable. Their contributions are for the authors to the extent that their criticism and suggestions enhance the authors' qualifications. Likewise, the referees help to evaluate science, contributing to its development, and collaborate in maintaining the quality of the journals.

Keywords : review; referee; journals.
