This work aimed to identify how the elements symbol, referent and reference, which stem from the Representational Theory proposed by Ogden and Richards, would be contemplated in view of the question: "When I mention a (male) student of Nursing, what do you think of?". The answers were submitted to Prose Analysis (ANDRË, 1983). Four hundred and sixty-one subjects were studied, of whom 120 were students in Nursing and 341 in Biomedicine. The reference element predominated (398 subjects), which was followed by the referent element (279 subjects). The symbol appeared with low frequency (5 subjects). As to reference, it was found that both the positive (deserves respect, common, gives credit to the person, social transformer) and negative (explicit declaration of homosexuality, prejudice concerning gender roles, identification by adjectives commonly applied to the female gender, describes prejudice with regard to the professional/student, prejudice concerning the course, assertion concerning the existence of prejudice and stud) extremes were present. As to the referent, the concepts adequately described the characteristics of the profession. Among men, the category presenting the highest percentage was explicit declaration of homosexuality and among women, the categories were professional future, describes characteristics of the profession and gives credit to the person, with a percentage of 14.9%; among the students of Biomedicine, the prevailing category was a student like any other (21.4%); among the students of Nursing, the prevailing category was gives credit to the person (24.1%).

Palavras-chave : nursing students; prejudice.
