This descriptive and exploratory study aims to present aspects concerning nursing communication in the primary care of children's health based on the follow-up of children's growth and development. The empirical study was founded on the observation of nursing activities in the sectors of vaccination, pre-consultation, post-consultation and sample collection for newborns' screening in two basic health units in the city of Franca - SP. In a general way, the needs presented by mothers were not taken as health problems and care delivery and communication establishment were restricted to procedures such as the observation of anthropometric measures, medication delivery, newborns' screening or vaccination, among others. It was noticed that health education opportunities were lost and that the nurse-mother-child interaction needs to be constructed on basis of adequate communication, self-care attempts, health promotion and quality of life.
