This study consists of an experiment report after getting to know the benefits obtained through Animal Assisted Therapy in four health institutions of the city of São Paulo. The visits occurred in the second semester of 2001 in one place specialized in special education for children with diverse syndromes; one that houses old people who are abandoned or with no family; one that supports children with cancer and another that houses and assists aidetic children. Upon observing the animals with the patients, we perceive that the latter become happier, in better conditions, talking more among themselves and with the volunteers; and that Animal Assisted Therapy may also be used as a resource for approximation between nurse and patient.

Keywords : animal assisted therapy; nursing.
