This is a descriptive and exploratory study, which aimed to evaluate the assimilation of women in the puerperium related to the orientations given by the nurses to the groups of mothers in the rooming-in unit at the University Hospital of the University of São Paulo. 24 mothers were interviewed before and after the orientations. In a second period, a check-list was used when the researcher attended the orientation given to each group of mothers and registered the contents for the sake of comparison with the answers given by the mothers during the interviews. Similar data were combined and the results showed that most of the mothers assimilate the orientations offered to groups of mothers. The lowest degree of assimilation was demonstrated by the youngest mothers, those with a low level of study, mothers who had 5 to 6 visits during their antenatal period and the mothers who had consensual union. This study contributed to the validation of the strategy used to give orientations to the mothers who stayed in the rooming-in unit of the aforesaid hospital.
