The communication process is a theme that emerged from the data analysis of the bibliographic research carried out by the authors with respect to scientific production about neonatal nursing. The questions that justified this study were: to discover the meaning of this production and to understand how the communication theme figures in scientific production about neonatal nursing. This study aimed to describe the communication process in scientific production about neonatal nursing and verify publication frequency according to year, country, language and publication type. 1940 neonatal nursing abstracts were analyzed, and communication was identified as the central theme in 81 of them. The dimension of the communication process was composed by 4 analytical categories. These categories were interrelated and show the current state of neonatal nursing communication knowledge. The majority of the publications originated in the USA and the majority of the abstracts were written in English.
