This study aims to describe the therapeutic help relationship approach and was realized by means of a non-directive, patient-focused, semi-structured interview, which was chosen as the data collection technique. We interviewed a totally laryngectomized patient in the process of phonatory rehabilitation with the Provox prosthesis. He was a member of GARPO (Support Group for the Rehabilitation of Ostomized/Laryngectomized People). The interview, which was recorded on a cassette tape, took place in the GARPO nurses' room in House number 5 on the campus of the University of São Paulo at Ribeirão Preto and took 45 minutes. The nurse attempted to understand the problem presented by the patient and his solution alternatives, thus establishing a help relationship with minimum interference. The analysis emphasizes the problems presented by the patient as well as the positive and negative aspects of the nurse's performance. It was concluded that it is not in response to the patient's diagnosis that the nurse must act. His focus of attention should be the laryngectomized person and his instrument is the adequate use of communication and the therapeutic approach techniques.

Keywords : help relationship; laryngectomized; phonatory rehabilitation; nursing.
