In many countries there is a shortage of nurses. In Brazil, mainly in the Northeast, North and Central West Region, in areas distant from more developed centers, there is a lack of nurses and other more specialized health professionals. This deficit creates a unique opportunity to promote the formation of professionals on a large scale. This article aims to evaluate the implications of the introduction of new computer and internet technologies for nursing education. The author realizes a bibliographical review, using the database of the WEB OF SCIENCE, LILACS and MEDLINE. Key words: nursing and distance education; nursing and computer and education; nursing and internet and education. We analyzed 72 articles and 335 abstracts published in national and international periodicals from 1982 to 2001. The research was accomplished at the Central Library of the Campus of the University of São Paulo at Ribeirão Preto. Conclusions: the potential of the Internet is already a reality and it presents a growing tendency to take creative and innovative learning to students distributed over distant geographical areas. This technology includes exciting implications for the formation and continuous education of nurses and doctors in general.
