Many researches do not present concepts as a base for research objectives and methodology. This work intends to conceptualize and analyze informatics applied to nursing and other associated subconcepts. Based on the principles of documental research, we used the computer as a research instrument, together with a manual search in the periodical "Computer in Nursing" between 1985 and 2000. We found 36 articles of interest for analyzing the concepts related to informatics applied to nursing and other associated subconcepts. The delimited period is justified as being relevant for the evolution of that science and its application to nursing. The search of the articles was accomplished in the Central Library of the University of São Paulo at Ribeirão Preto. The investigation verified that only 45% of the published articles presented methodological concepts and the quantitative methodology was the most applied one, followed by the descriptive methodology. The questionnaire was the most used data collection instrument, followed by the scales of measures. Finally, we considered the importance of highlighting, analyzing and understanding the concepts for the sake of clear delineation and good quality of a scientific investigation work that claims to be serious.
