The correct choice of a journal is an important step for the communication of research results. This quantitative and descriptive study aimed at identifying nursing journals with the highest circulation in each specific area, highest impact, good ratings in Qualis and citation and reference guidelines, for researchers to be able to choose among the journals indexed in LILACS and MEDLINE more easily. A predominance was found of Brazilian journals which are indexed in LILACS and are rated with a "B" in Qualis, whose citation and reference guidelines follow the ABNT (Brazilian Association of Technical standards). All the journals selected from MEDLINE were American. Most of them were rated with an "A", were listed in the JCR (Journal Citation Reports), had the highest circulation and followed the APA (American Psychological Association) format. It is believed that this study will contribute both to clinical nurses and researchers.

Keywords : nursing research; publication; communication.
