The search for health is more complex and broader than the elimination of illness. This fact has increasingly been observed, which is an alert to the main points of health promotion and development, which have been underestimated due to a model centered on curing illness. This research aims to develop a participatory action by persons from the same community, in order to stimulate the development of empowerment with a view to self-care. Interviews and meetings in a rural community allowed for a debate about life, health and well-being on the basis of emerging group necessities. Health can be seen as an individual conquest, which must be promoted by health professionals, governmental policies and social justice. Health was considered to be a conquest that consists of well-being resulting from emancipation.

Keywords : subjectivity; health promotion; empowerment.
