This study is based on the "encounter group" of Carl Rogers (1994) and was realized with a group of ten mothers of newborn babies (RN's) of high and medium risk interned in Neonate Wards (UIN) of the Maternity School Assis Chateaubriand (MEAC) in Fortaleza-CE. The aim was to allow for the mothers' interpersonal relationships and to propitiate a homelike atmosphere where experiences of a similar situation can be shared. Data were collected from November 12 to 14, 2001, when the encounter groups were held with a duration from 45 to 60 minutes. The stories showed that the mothers feel unhappy about being separated from their babies and that the mother’s discharge from hospital is a cause of great distress. It was concluded that the group arises as an opportunity for free expression.

Keywords : neonatology; encounter group; humanistic theory.
