This study is a result of the authors’ belief about the use of research data for the improvement of patient care. In 1999, we carried out a research in order to analyze the contents of nursing reports at a hospital on the countryside of São Paulo state. Our research results encouraged us to carry out the present study, aimed at: planning guidelines for the reports; training the nursing team; analysing the report contents after the training, comparing them to our previous research data. The used methodology was a retrospective analysis of 79 patient reports at the same hospital. Dugas (1984) has been used as a theoretical reference base for data collection. We concluded that the guidelines and training provided quantitatively and qualitatively more significant reports.

Keywords : team; nursing; reports.
