This study was held at a private hospital in the interior of São Paulo State and aimed at identifying and analyzing how the client views nursing and the nurse with a view indicating possible contributions to the definition of these professionals’ roles. Data were collected through an interview guided by open questions about the identification and functions of the nursing service elements. One hundred and two clients were interviewed who had been in hospital for more than three days and whose age ranged from 18 to 88 years old. It was verified that clients relate nursing to the action of caring, but are not able to identify the nurse as a professional responsible for care management or as a care provider. On the other hand, it stood out that the tenuous attitude adopted by the nurse in approaching the client in terms of professional role, which is revealed by generic and informal communication, hinders the configuration of a definite image required by the profession.

Keywords : identity; nurse; nursing; view; client.
