This study uses a qualitative approach and aims to discuss the relational aspects about the obstetric staff, which were evidenced in the description of the experience of the professionals that took part in the SES/SP Project "Insertion of the midwife in childbirth care in the São Paulo State Health Department". The research subjects were midwives and obstetricians from four maternity hospitals of the state network. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews. Analysis consisted of careful and detailed reading of the interviews, leading to a selection of groups with common thoughts, which received a thematic identification, thus making up a category. This study focused on two categories: conflicting relation and relation of mutual respect, autonomy and collaboration. Conflicting relations among members of the obstetric staff were probably influenced by the historical and social context. The results showed that the current situation requires the participation of midwifes, for them to become organized as a professional category with a view to consolidating the importance of their role in childbirth care.

Keywords : obstetric nursing; teamwork; interpersonal relationship.
