This is a descriptive study from a qualitative perspective, aimed at analyzing the communication process between the health team and the parents at a neonatal ICU of a university hospital in Cuiabá - MT. The data were collected through participant observation. We realized that the interaction between team and parents mostly happens in an automatic, impersonal and mechanic way, while non-verbal affective communication does not exist in the context of the work. In general, authoritarians discourse occurs with asymmetric communication, putting the parents in the position of mere listeners. We perceived that the mothers have special needs, such as being listened to and expressing their feelings, and the team does not possess interactional knowledge and technologies to accomplish these needs. Communication must favor quality care; therefore, the knowledge and the implementation of tools that facilitate the interaction with the family are basic in the search for a more humanized care.
