This study looked at the communicative relation that exists between aged persons interned in a Philanthropic Home for Old People in Curitiba, and their families, in order to plan and execute nursing actions that value the aged person and provide his reintegraton in the family and social means. This descriptive, exploratory study was held with 9 aged persons, whose age ranged from 60 to 86 years old, while the number of years they had been interned in this institution varied from 7 days to 6 years. In this work, the recommendations of Resolution 196/MS were followed. Data were collected by means of semistructured interviews, seeking to obtain information that would picture the communication process experienced by the interned aged persons and their family. After analyzing the data, we grouped them into categories that show the process of interaction, communication and intra-familiar and institutional experience. The following categories were obtained: previous housing; relationship with family; taking a decision; reason for internment; and feeling about being placed in a home for old people. The obtained results allowed us to understand the importance of communication between the aged persons and his family in the process of facing senility and senescence.
