This work approaches some aspects of the communication process that occurred in the care rendered to the woman in labor during her stay at the childbirth and delivery rooms of a private Hospital Maternity in the city of Curitiba. The main goal was to identify the kind of communication maintained between the health team, the woman in labor and the family, in order to recover and value communication as a factor that minimizes the anxiety, insecurity, pain and expectation experienced by the woman in labor and her family in this period. Data were collected through Participant Observation and semistructured interviews held among interned women, in accordance with the determinations of Resolution 196/96, Guidelines and Regulatory Norms for Research on Human Beings. Peplau’s Theory of Interpersonal Relations in Nursing was adopted as a theoretical reference base. The following categories were obtained as a result of data collection: communication between team and woman in labor; among the involved professionals and among team, woman in labor and family. We observed that the communication in the childbirth and delivery rooms is inadequate in view of the procedures that have to be realized.
