The pregnant-postpartum cycle represents a period of intense biopsychosocial transformations in the life of the woman and her family. Several factors can interfere in this phase of the woman's life cycle, one of which is the communication process established between the health professional and the woman. The general objective of the study is to identify how communication among the health professional, the woman in postpartum and her family is established. This is an exploratory-descriptive research developed at a university hospital in Curitiba. Data collection was based on individual interviews. All norms of Resolution 196/96 - Guidelines and Regulatory Norms for Research on human beings were respected. It was observed that many professionals are not capable of establishing appropriate communication with the woman during her pregnant-postpartum cycle. It was also verified that the lack of a bond between the customer and the health professional of health represents an important barrier for establishing their mutual communication. On the basis of data analysis, it can be concluded that the communication process between the woman in postpartum and the health professional occurs inadequately, which consequently jeopardizes the whole care rendered during this period.
