In Brazil, direct bacilloscopy of the sputum continues being a priority measure recommended by the PNCT (National Tuberculosis Control Program) from the Brazilian Ministry of Health for pulmonary tuberculosis diagnosis, due to being a fast, safe and cheap method. As a sequence of previous studies, this research aims to identify aspects of nursing workers` verbal and non-verbal communication when they orient the patient for obtaining the sputum specimen, using non experimental research in the form of a descriptive study by means of qualitative analysis recourses. For this purpose, an observation script was elaborated, which contained verbal and non-verbal communication items. Participant observation was used for data collection. The results of this study show that nursing workers do not use interpersonal skills during care, which makes the development of PNCT actions more difficult.

Palavras-chave : interpersonal skills; sputum specimens; orientation.
