This study aims at evaluating the role played by dance in the rehabilitation of laryngectomized patients during three years. Data were collected from August 1998 to 2001 and the sample consisted of 20 male and female laryngectomized patients from 60 to 80 years old who participated in the GARPO (Support Group for Ostomized - Laryngectomized People). Semi-structured interviews, observation and group dynamics with dance exercises were used. Results showed that, in three years of work, the frequency and the number of dance exercises were increased, which led to improved physical resistance among laryngectomized patients in the post-operative period. It was also concluded that improvements occurred in corporal awareness, communication and motorial coordination, balance and creativity, demonstration of joy, pleasure and enthusiasm, as well as satisfactory changes in body posture.

Keywords : laryngectomy; dance therapy.
