This study aims at verifying the prenatal healthcare indicators provided by the Basic Healthcare Network in Ribeirão Preto for a group of women and identifying how the users’ access to the prenatal care took place. This is a descriptive and exploratory research. Data were collected by means of semi-structured interviews held with 35 women whose deliveries occurred at the Airport Complex Maternity Hospital and received prenatal healthcare provided by the municipal Basic Healthcare Network. We identified that 54.6% of the women started prenatal healthcare in the second term of pregnancy and that 40% had less than 6 prenatal consultations. In prenatal healthcare, the socio-cultural access was defined by the women as biological and individual care, centered on the medical consultation. Organizational access presented obstacles in relation to waiting time, lack of vacancies and difficulties for realizing exams. With respect to geographical/economic access, distance from the maternity and financial difficulty for transport were mentioned. We believe that this study may be of help for actions that contribute to prenatal care planning in the framework of the Women’s Health Program, with a view to building up a new practice, involving multiprofessional teams at different levels of complexity.
