This work presents the experience of graduate students who are fellows in the Teaching Development Program (PAE) as well as that of faculty in the course Public Health Nursing I, a subject in the Undergraduate Nursing Program of the University of São Paulo at Ribeirão Preto College of Nursing during the second semester of 2001. Basic information concerning the Program is presented, which aims to improve graduate student education by means of supervised teaching training in didactic activities. Both in fellows' assessment and graduate students' accounts, it was noticed that PAE can contribute to the learning-teaching process, thus facilitating the development of communication among actors, including students, fellows and faculty. The Program, which was implemented at the University of São Paulo at Ribeirão Preto College of Nursing in 1994, has shown increasing development and is important in the preparation of faculty for higher education teaching; therefore, the participation of graduate students must be encouraged.
